Princess Leia Buns

This week I stepped outside of my regular bun box and created some Princess Leia inspired buns.

I got comments ranging from "Your hair is cute" to "You look like a little girl." To achieve this look I parted my hair down the middle prior to getting in the shower to wash and condition my hair. I cleansed each side and then used an elastic ponytail holder to position the ponytails for the buns.

To prep my hair for bunning I applied a leave-in conditioner to each ponytail, followed that with coconut oil, and lastly SheaMoisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie. Each bun is comprised of two 2-strand twists that were wrapped around the ponytail holder and hair pinned into place.

To smooth my edges I used the same leave-in conditioner, shea butter, and a satin scarf to tie down the edges over night. Theses buns were fun, I liked the way they looked, and they were quick.

If you are bunning for a protective styles, remember to switch up the bun position so that you will decrease the chance of experiencing breakage at the point of your in which the ponytail holder is placed.

For me, buns work just fine

Nothing special - just a bun.

I started with shampooed and conditioned hair
Then I two strand twisted the the ends and pinned them into place while the hair was still damp.
I am still applying product to my ends using the Chicoro method of moisturizing and sealing:
-Leave-in conditioner
-Castor/Sweet Almond oil mix
-SheaMoisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie

This bun is slicked back with shea butter so perfectly that it really shows off my crazy edges and hairline. No, they are not thinning - it's hereditary.

Back in a bun...

Over the weekend the hubby and I hosted a couples game night. Most of the night was spent playing MJ Experience and as a result of all those wrist flicking movements - my wrist hurts. Of course I would do this to myself before hair wash & style day.

To give my wrist a break and decided to do a quick and easy bun. Also with doing this bun I decided to utilized Chicoro's Method of sealing to lock in some moisture for a few days.

The bun was inspired by this look worn by actress Nia Long:

Nia Long's part is off center but I preferred a center part this time.

The cornrows in the front are not tight at all l- after applying all the product my hair laid down very easily.

Steps followed:
  • Shampooed with Giovanni SAS Shampoo
  • Conditioned with Giovanni SAS Conditioner
  • Applied (layers according to Chicoro's Method) leave-in conditioner, Castor/Olive oil mix, and SheaMoisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie (SMCES) to front sections to be cornrowed.
  • After cornrowing the front section, applied leave-in conditioner, Castor/Olive oil mix, and SheaMoisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie
  • For the bun the SMCES was applied to each section of hair before 2-strand twisting. The bun is made up of about five 2-strand twists.

Life as We Know it Braid Hair

This a 2nd style  taken from the movie Life as We Know it. Katherine Heigl wore her hair this way in the movie as well.
Make a french braid along the left side of her head as shown below
French braid the right side as shown below too.
Add the 2 braids together in the middle back of her head shown below.
Make a big loose messy bun

Life as We Know it Roll Hair

This style is taken from the movie Life as We Know it. Katherine Heigl wore her hair this way through out the movie.
Start on one side and make a roll that leads to the back center of her head.
Roll the other side to meet the first roll in the middle of her head.
Hook the 2 rolls together with an elastic.
 Make a cute messy bun

Toddler Fancy Hair

As I have mentioned so many times my daughters hair is so fine and difficult to work with that when I start a hairstyle I always hope that it turns out cute.
We started by making a small poof in the front of her head.
Because of how short and thin her hair is we took the bottom half of her hair and secured it upwards with an elastic.
Then all the hair gets pulling into a high ponytail.  I put ringlets in her hair using the flat iron.
Once the ringlets were done I used bobbie pins to lay them in place.
Below is the top back view of her head.
This last picture is to show everyone how much fun we have doing her hair.  As you can see she is full of it and always a moving target for hairstyles.

Roll to Side Bun

We are on a roll at our house.
This one is very easy and fast.
Start on the left side of her head and make a roll adding new hair each roll similar to adding hair to a french braid.  Roll all the way to the right side of her head.
Below shows that I just pulled the right side hair back to meet the roll.  Then secure all the hair in an elastic.
Make a messy bun and we added a flower for our accessory.

Rolls to Side Bun

This is a fun and easy style that takes about 5 minutes.
Start with 1 simple roll across the top front of her head.
Make a 2nd roll parallel to the first roll secure both with an elastic
Pull all the remaining hair into a low side ponytail.
From the ponytail make a messy bun.  I always use bobbie pins to control how I want the bun to look.
My daughter requested a flower to add as an accessory.

Toddler Rolls

Although my daughters hair is very thin we got the rolls to stay in and they actually looked very cute.
I started on the right side and rolled her hair by pulling up new hair as we went back.
Then I made the same roll along the left side of her head.
Because the end ponytail was very small we made a cute little messy bun at the end.
She wanted a big flower so we put it over the messy bun. She ended up with a cute princess style. I didn't get a picture of the flower or the front.

Side Braid to Bun

Start by making a french braid on the top left side of her head continue the french braid on until it goes across her head to the opposite ear.
Now make a messy bun .

Braids to Messy Bun

Start with the bangs pulled back into a poof.
Make 1 small french braid along the poof.
Then make a 2nd french braid parallel to the first.  As shown below do this to both sides of her head.
The top of her head with the poof and braids is shown below.
Then pull all the hair into a ponytail.
Make a messy bun with the ponytail.

Below is a side view of the braids and messy bun.
